Hayward’s Grand Safari Company puts Africa on the map as World Leader of the ‘Grand Safari’.
Hayward’s Grand Safari Company South Africa has received the top title in the category as World’s Leading Glamping Operator at the 24th Annual World Travel Awards red carpet event which took place at the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, Vietnam, 10 December 2017.
As the only nominee from the African continent in the World Travel Awards Grand Finale Gala Event, Hayward’s Grand Safari Company pipped international contenders Camp Kerala, Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, The Pop Up Hotel and The Resort at Paws Up to the final winning post.
Owner and Adventure Extraordinaire Peter Hayward said, “Early on in my career, at age 37, I stepped away from the corporate ladder to develop a new concept in tourism. I conceptualised the big group tented camp industry. I created the 5-star hotel, which didn’t have an address. Today, we remain passionate about our mobile safari lodge for 200 guests, catered to by 100 staff, which you can take anywhere; to the places you most desire; and leave again, without a trace. I chose a world that is ecological, sustainable, low impact, environmental and revolved around the science of Nature. Back then I had no idea we would reach the pinnacle of the industry – in fact the globe – by having our mobile Grand Safari concept recognised today by the World Travel Awards as an industry World Leader.
“We are proud to work within the top game reserves in Africa from the Kruger to the Okavango. We raise funds for species in need and get involved in rhino and wild dog tracking and elephant collaring. We develop people through our staff training. We watch guests respond to it all. It is one thing owning a safari lodge but if you can keep moving it around as you do on a mobile safari, you keep the exploration spirit alive and kicking. We host some of the world’s most famous opinion leaders and celebrities on a Grand Safari from Mandela to Oprah, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Dire Straits, the King and Queen of the Netherlands and many, many other top players in industry. I get to meet them all and be of service. I couldn’t be a happier man than I am today. Thank you to the World Travel Awards, my team, our valued guests and the continent of Africa – this is a great honour!”
President and Founder of the World Travel Awards, Graham Cooke, said: “We have recognised the leading lights of global tourism and I wish to offer my heartfelt congratulations to all of our winners. On our 24th anniversary, the World Travel Awards continues to celebrate those organisations who push the boundaries of industry excellence.”
