On the outskirts of Joburg, Muldersdrift has great country appeal – perfect for when you need a quick getaway but don’t want to spend too much time in the car. Here are some of fun things to explore there.

Eat Vegan Food At Leafy Greens

This vegan-friendly café is situated on an organic farm and is an oasis that provides only the healthiest vegetarian and vegan foods that come straight from their own farm. Take in the stunning setting and help yourself to the mouth-watering options on the buffet table; or order delicious items from their menu, such as dairy-free toasted cheese and tomato on sourdough bread, a baked cheese-free pizza or a delectable vegan burger, made with a quinoa patty. There is also a shop on-site that sells all kinds of good-for-you things – from food and natural beauty products to blenders and more. Everything you need for a healthy lifestyle is at Leafy Greens.

Have A Hearty Meal At Casalinga

Right next door to the Leafy Greens is Casalinga, an Italian-styled country bistro that doubles as a stunning wedding venue. Great for a hearty Sunday lunch or if you prefer something sweeter, they also have a chocolatier on the premises called the Chocolate Tier, where you can indulge in a delightful cacao experience!

Visit The Cradle Of Humankind

A fascinating place that’s definitely worth a visit (or re-visit) for everyone, Maropeng is the official visitor’s centre for the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. Here you will find a wealth of information about the development of humans over the last few millions of years. Visitors will see fossils, learn about the origins of humankind and inspect stone tools that are over one million years old. It’s a great place for the whole family.

Explore The Sterkfontein Caves

Also located at Maropeng, we recommend you take a tour through the world-famous caves so that you don’t miss out on anything. The most significant fossil discoveries in the caves were ‘Mrs Ples’, a 2.1-million-year-old Australopithecus skull, and ‘Little Foot’, an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton that is over three million years old. Note: If you take the tour, don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, as it involves quite a bit of walking.

Go On A Hike

Get some fresh country air in your lungs; lace up your takkies and take a hike along one of the many trails depending on your skill and enthusiasm. From the 18km Magalieskraans Trail to the 3km Olivenhout Trail, there’s a hike suitable to everyone’s level of fitness.

Ride Your Bike

If you’re into mountain biking, Magaliesburg is the perfect place to get your wheels in motion. The Skeerport Trail is a great MTB route to really get your heart pumping.

It’s a great day out in the countryside and visitors are welcome to bring picnic baskets and settle down for a tasty meal on the lush grass. Walkhaven also boasts a tea garden and braai areas.
