Following the opening of a dedicated Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) office in Johannesburg in March last year, tourist arrivals from South Africa to the Emirates have grown over 50 percent.

According to TCA Abu Dhabi, the growth in tourist numbers is also being seen from other markets, with the total number of travellers into Abu Dhabi increasing by 18 percent during 2015, with over 4.1m visitors travelling to the destination.

When TCA Abu Dhabi launched in 2015 it hosted events such as the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, the Abu Dhabi Food Festival, the Red Bull Air Race and the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, to encourage tourism to the destination.

“Our aim for 2016 is to get the message across that Abu Dhabi is more than a stopover destination,” says Jean Martins, country manager for TCA Abu Dhabi South Africa.
